About The Miniature American Shepherd

General Info

Origin
The Miniature American Shepherd is the result of a breeding program that began in the 1960s to produce a scaled-down version of the Australian Shepherd. While its unique size makes it a suitable companion dog, it still possesses the traits it was bred for – herding small stock.

Temperament
Versatile, enthusiastic and quick to learn, the Miniature American Shepherd is a protective, good-natured, devoted and loyal companion.

Activity level
An intelligent dog that takes well to action, the Miniature American Shepherd has proven to excel at agility, flyball, obedience, therapy work and herding.

Height/Weight
The Miniature American Shepherd may be between 13-18 in (33-45.7 cm) at the shoulder and weigh 20-40 lb (9-18 kg).

Coat
The coat is moderate in length, straight or slightly wavy, weather-resistant with a soft undercoat.

Colour
Acceptable colours are black, blue merle, red or red merle, all with or without tan and/or white trim.

Grooming
Weekly brushing will remove dirt and loose hairs and keep the dog looking neat. More frequent grooming will be required during shedding season.
